The 1st of December every year has been designated World AIDS Day since 1988, to raise awareness about the AIDS (autoimmune deficiency syndrome) pandemic caused by the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and to mourn those who have been lost in the fight against the disease.
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Days is “Know your status”. A huge barrier to ‘knowing one’s status’ remains the poor understanding of HIV and AIDS.
