On 14 July 2022, the Health Minister of Malaysia, Khairy Jamaluddin has announced that the framework for registration of cannabidiol (CBD) products will be made public by the Health Ministry the following year. Once considered an illegal drug in Malaysia, this may mark the start of a commercial and legal route to market products containing cannabis compounds in Malaysia.

While many Asian countries are becoming more tolerant of the once taboo drugs- cannabis, the plant still remains illegal in the majority of Asian countries. According to consulting firm Prohibition Partners, the medicinal cannabis business in Asia could be worth $5.8 billion by 2024. Due to the stigma associated with the plant, many people are still hesitant to openly wager on the commodity.
All products obtained from the Cannabis sativa plant are referred to as cannabis. This cannabis plant contains around 540 chemical substances. Among these chemical compounds, CBD is one of the active compounds found in the cannabis plant. It helps in preserving a state of balance by interacting with the endocannabinoid system in your body.
The other most commonly known compound is the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is well known for causing ecstasy feeling associated with marijuana use. CBD, on the other hand, is not psychoactive like THC.
Hence, this makes CBD an appealing alternative for those seeking pain treatment and other ailments without the psychoactive effects of cannabis or other negative side effects associated with some prescription medications.
