Allergy Causing Foods
Food allergies are caused by your immune system incorrectly identifying some of the proteins in the food as harmful. Even a small amount of allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as:
- Tingling or itching in the mouth
- Hives
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, face, or other parts of the body
- Wheezing, nasal congestion, or difficulty breathing
- Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
A food allergy may lead to severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis in certain people. The symptoms include:
- Constriction and tightening of the airways
- Swollen throat or lump sensation in the throat making it difficult to breathe
- Shock with hypotension (severe drop in blood pressure)
- Tachycardia (rapid pulse)
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness
Anaphylaxis requires emergency treatment as if left untreated, can lead to coma or even death.
Food allergy affects more children than that adults. Keep in mind that food allergy is not the same as food intolerance. While bothersome, food intolerance is a less serious condition that doesn't involve the immune system.
